Artwork Description

“Bushrangers Bay, Mornington Peninsula” by Geof Pearce.

This breathtaking view looking toward the identifiable landmark – Bushrangers Bay – is from one of the Cape Schanck walking track lookouts – on a wonderful warm sunny day in early autumn – it was a delight to paint.

It is a spectacular location, contrasted by the fresh green of the cliff top coastal vegetation, the dark blue brown of the imposing basalt cliffs in shade and the jagged unwelcoming grey rocky ledge along this imposing coast line.

The glorious mid-afternoon light just exposes the brown ochre colours of the rocky cliff.

The waters of the Southern Ocean that share the common blue colours with the sky, gently caressing the rock shelf at the base of the cliffs rising powerfully upward to the wonderful chorus of autumn clouds – clouds that are inescapably flying gently by – that are as significant as the insurmountable cliffs.

This well protected bay was named after two escaped convicts from Tasmania – a story that has a dark history steeped in violence and bloodshed.
