‘The Bowerbird can throw his voice and imitate the sounds of people and other birds; things which aren’t there. This painting is an allegory centred around the motif of the habitat: habitat as the habit of concealment and acquisition. The fragmented assonance of dancing shapes across the composition alludes to contents poised in the ‘bowers of consciousness’. The Aboriginal people called the bowerbird the ‘ghost bird’ because it often collects bones for its bower. In my painting the bird is whispering to the wind.‘
