Mangrove species are threatened with extinction throughout the world. They are vital as storm protection, a pollution filter and prevent erosion and sedimentation of rivers. Mangroves also provide habitat for wildlife and act as a nursery for aquatic animals. Their demise has been caused by coastal development, logging, agriculture and climate change.
